The Upper Corridor extends from
Boy Scout Island on the west side of the Fox River and Pottawatomie
Park and Golf Course on the East Side, with North Avenue and the
railroad bridge as its northern and southern boundaries.
- Serving as a welcoming entrance into the city, this segment
of the River Corridor project will be highlighted by the River
North Gateway project. Adopted by the St. Charles Noon Kiwanis
Club, travelers along Route 31 will be properly welcomed to
the city courtesy of new signage and lush landscaping, while
those traveling on foot will be able to easily access the river
via a new stairway connecting the pedestrian bridge to the
walkway along Route 31.
- Shoreline improvements along Boy Scout Island include the
planting of water willows, a beneficial species of native plant
highly valued for its water clarification properties. Commonly
found in tributary streams throughout Illinois, the water willow
was credited with helping the Kankakee River earn the title
of the state’s most pristine river. Rising just 20 to
30 inches above the water line, the water willow’s finely-shaped
leaves and small white flowers will make it a beautiful as
well as beneficial addition to the riverfront.
