Extending from Main Street to Prairie Street, the South Central Corridor
will be an exciting blend of redevelopment opportunities and streetscape
improvements. Five key areas have been identified:
- First Street Corridor
- Improvements to streetscape connections
- Riverwalk improvements along the bank from Illinois to Main
Street
- New pedestrian bridge connecting to plazas on both sides of
the river
- Private development opportunities
- Public gathering spaces — outdoor cafes, seating areas, interactive
fountains, lush planting, access to water’s edge
- Beith House Redevelopment Area
- Connecting streetscape from First Street to the river
- New riverwalk connection to Illinois Street and segregated
path system south to Prairie Street
- Enhancing Beith House grounds
- Create link into surrounding neighborhoods
- Illinois Street to Prairie Street
- Pedestrian link from Piano Factory bridge to Illinois Street

- Focal point structure for Indiana Street
- Parking around Beith House screened and realigned to allow
pedestrian access
- Segregated bicycle and pedestrian paths south of Piano Factory
Bridge
- Opportunities for interaction with water and northern and southern
ends
- Pedestrian connections back into downtown and surrounding developments
- Riverside Plaza
- Create gathering place and transition point between downtown
and waterfront
- Focal point at terminus of potential pedestrian bridge across
river
- Reorganize parking lot to create larger plaza space and home
for potential water fountain
- Water access from ramp adjacent to Harris Bank walkway
- Riverside Drive
- Enhance existing scenic corridor by segregating bicycle/pedestrian
traffic and narrowing the roadway
- Entry sign to welcome visitors at intersection of Route 25
and Fifth Avenue
- Open spaces for public art visible to motorists and as a connection
to surrounding neighborhoods
- Segregated path systems with overlooks and access to water’s
