River Corridor Foundation Presents Annual Golden Turtle Award to Munhall Instructor
St. Charles, IL, May 9, 2016:
The St. Charles River Corridor Foundation presented their prestigious Golden Turtle Award to Ms. Doreen Tieche, fourth grade instructor at Munhall School in St. Charles.
“The Golden Turtle is awarded on an annual basis to the individual or group that has contributed the most to promoting the mission and goals of the River Corridor Foundation,” said Al Patten of the River Corridor Foundation as he led the award ceremony at the D303 School Board meeting on May 9, 2016 at Haines Middle School. “The St. Charles River Corridor Foundation’s mission is to enhance and beautify the shorelines of the Fox River and to increase recreational use of the river. Educating the community, and especially the children, is a vital component our mission and we welcome opportunities to meet with individuals or groups to further the knowledge and appreciation of the Fox River. Doreen has exemplified the very best of helping us carry our mission forward with these children.
“We utilize the Fox River as a focal point for our science program each year as it brings a sense of reality and personal involvement to the students,” says Ms. Teich. “In conjunction with the River Corridor Foundation we have developed a program focused on storm water management and how our daily lives can impact water quality in the Fox River. These children take these lessons to heart and promote environmentally sound practices with their families and in their neighborhoods.”
“Thanks to Doreen’s efforts, the River Corridor Foundation has been able to greatly expand our educational efforts. We have now enlisted the environmental science students at St. Charles East High School to enhance this storm water management program and they will make the presentation to the Munhall students (and hopefully throughout D303 grade schools) beginning in the fall of 2016,” said John Rabchuk, President, River Corridor Foundation. “In addition, the high school students will begin working with Friends of the Fox to begin a monthly water quality testing program along the Fox River throughout St. Charles. The results from this water testing program will provide the community with key data to measure and analyze the environmental impact as components of the Active River Project are mplemented. These high school and grade school children will be the primary beneficiaries of the environmental, recreational and economic enhancements we anticipate from the Active River Project, so their direct involvement is an exciting component to the entire project.”
“Doreen’s efforts started the ball rolling and we are very excited with the direction it has taken to broaden community involvement and understanding of the role that the Fox River plays in all of our lives,” said Rabchuk.
